New to Electricity. What to do.

I have never really paid for Electricity and I don't want to get ripped off.
I have just started renting. Owner says he used nPower. I don't need gas as its comes with the council/water.
So I just need electricity and I want to pay monthly. I don't have previous details or readings.
What should I do? Just signup to standard variable direct debit with Npower or should I shop around?

Shop around use the MSE Energy Club or similar .
Use average use as your input then look at the daily standing charge and unit costs .
The amount that is shown as years cost or payment will be an estimate based upon the average .Your actual bill may be more or less depending upon your usage .
Alternative would be the best deal from NPower .0 -
Are you sure about the gas? Just seems a little strange that it comes with the council/water!What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0

.
However, .......
The OP must register with NPower first and provide them with an actual meter reading before he can switch suppliers. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
The main thing is to establish your meter readings for moving in.
Ideally, a letting agent (independent 3rd party) recorded them and has it on record: useful if there is dispute in the future.
An e-mail from the landlord, confirming the readings, is pretty good.
Date the readings. IT IS like a hostage holding a newspaper.0 -

You will need to register with the current supplier first. (Don't get tied into any tariff with early exit fees if you plan to switch)
This explains how you can then get the best deal
