Alternatives to Screwfix?

I have used Screwfix loads - good prices and convenient. However, I haven't been happy with their service of late so - are there any good alternatives?

I haven't come across anywhere with the same range, although I guess that stocking all of it isn't necessary as long as I can make up the minimum for free delivery.

Thanks!

  • Hi,

have a look here, same kinda idea, with free delivery £40+.
  • Toolstation is owned by the people that used to own screwfix and so they are similar.

Screwfix can be hit and miss sometimes, but they have a hell of a lot of stock!
  • Hi,

didn't know that, just happened to get a flyer through the post yesterday.

Agree with previous posters, good all round service @ Toolstation :j

Though for actual power tools I find "These Guys" to be very reasonable, all depends what you're after I suppose.

Thanks for the suggestions! I guess I was thinking of a place to get lots of odds and ends (a few sockets, some plumbing fittings, screws, door handles etc) at the same time - so the shop needs to have a pretty massive range. Toolstation looks interesting, although a smaller range than Screwfix so I'll look there.

Just in case anyone else is interested, I have tried a few other stores on line:

I bought a vacuum cleaner from tooled-up a while back (http://www.tooled-up.com) which was at an amazing price.

I have used plumbworld in the past too (http://www.plumbworld.co.uk/).

I also found somewhere for decorating goods (not tried it yet):

There is no major problem with Screwfix, but after being super-happy with them for ages I was just a bit frustrated with them a few times. It was nothing much (see below), but when I searched for some handles we wanted and they didn't have the right colour, I decided to search the internet as a whole (I was just always using Screwfix) and I was surprised to see that there were other shops selling the handles in the colour I wanted and cheaper too! So I decided to start shopping round a bit.

The initial problem was with delivery - a parcel was lost in the post and it took ages to put right (and the replacement subsequently sent to the wrong address, which was their mistake and took a lot of phoning up to get sorted). I accept that they rely on the delivery company, but I was disappointed that it wasn't sorted quicker. I decided to let them know that I thought this could be improved (given how happy I had been with their service in the past) and was much more disappointed when the letter I received back from them suggested to me that they didn't really care. Not a big issue, but it just irked me a little.

My wife also uses the trade counter near her work and doesn't really like it - she just feels that they aren't very helpful.

So no major issues, in fact it is nit-picking really, but it got me wondering whether there were alternatives and whether those alternatives could save us money!

Much more expensive round here, plus it takes longer. Good thought though!
