Yes, but the Theft Act doesn't define what's "reasonable", so it would be up to the courts to decide whether leaving the money alone until it was reclaimed was reasonable or not. Also, they would have to prove that my failure to take such action was done "dishonestly".

What exactly, is dishonest about waiting until the owner asks for the money back?

We are clearly never going to agree on this so I vote that we discontinue. There's more to life.

Don't close the account - use it to switch to another bank that pays you a switching bonus (and then switch it again, and again....several hundred pounds to be made!)

I think someone has created a phantom Archi Bald MSE forum account!

Each to their own but I find it hard to believe that a police officer investigating a crime would believe this, if the money had been paid into an account which had been opened by the criminal but then moved by you.
Yeah. Father Ted comes to mind here. "The money was just resting in my account!". LOL.
  • I wonder why OP has not been back with an update - have we been had here?

Nope, it is me, myself and I. Would still do as I said, despite everyone having vivid imaginations of what might happen.

But I also think this thread has pretty much outlived its usefulness now.

You need to speak to someone in the Natwest application fraud department, you need to ask them to close the account, remove the footprint from your credit file and load a victim CIFAS flag.
