USB query

I have 4 usb connections, they all work but only 2 in use. I've bought a laptop hard drive which has 2 usb's to connect it to the pc. When I plug them in Windows closes & I have to restart. This also happens with the usb hub I've bought.
Any ideas why this should be.
Thanks

The HDD is probabaly drawing the full 1/2 amp from each socket. IF the other 2 things are also drawing close to the max your motherboard might not be able to deliver that much power and crashes.
Does this happen if you unplug everything else & just plug in the harddrive?0 -
is the hub powered or un-powered?0
