    can you be more specific about the contradiction/s you're referring to? I've had a look & I couldn't see anything. maybe I'm looking at the wrong part of the site you linked to? :confused:

    The link says ...

    1. Laying Cage System

    2. Barn System

    3. Free Range System

    Whereas previous posts have suggested that ....

    1 = Free Range

    2 = Barn

    3 = Caged

    So the order is "switched", hence the confusion.

    oh right, I see now :o

    but isn't that a list of production methods rather than being information about egg stamping? at least that's how it reads to me & why I couldn't see any contradiction

    btw, the supermarket free range eggs I have just now have a '1' stamped on them

    In a supermaket if you lift the lid it should have a printed list of what each number referres to on the inside.

    Or it does on my sainsburys box.

    tesco free range eggs box

    i have just opened one - we always buy free range as a minimum. it says:

    "understanding egg codes
    1UK12345
    1 = free range
    uk = origin
    12345 or 123sco = farm ID"

    hope this helps!!!!!

    Lol I remember how angry I was when I started this thread ages ago.

    I have had my own three little hens for quite a while now and I wouldnt be without them. They are so funny, I love them and they reward me with the most wonderful eggs i've ever tasted. Seems fair!

    I don't think the 1) 2) 3) on the web site contradicts the coding references given earlier, I think it simply lists three different styles of egg production.

    I gather this happened a while ago now but what about letting the butcher know by post, how you were a happy customer, but have had your faith in him shaken. It would be less confrontational (although I really admire your initial confrontation & think it was the right thing to do) and might give him a chance to explain himself if he wanted to. (I was just thinking about the "support local traders" problem you were experiencing.

    that's how I interpreted it too (see my earlier post)

    I think the British Egg Information Service website's information is badly & misleadingly presented, & could easily lead to confusion. if I were a cynic I might think it was deliberate :rolleyes:
