If the tax is bought on Tuesday or Wednesday, there'll be the option to start it from next month.
If the "three weeks" since the purchase is actually just a few days longer, then the change-of-keeper date may be before the 1st September.

Is that still the case if it expired at start of the month and wasn't sorn'd ?

    I would think so.

If the tax expired at the end of August and if it wasn't declared SORN then the tax must be backdated to 1st September.

If it was SORN'ed then the new tax could be from 1st October.

We await the OP coming back.

So if tax was due 1st September you could tax it from 1st October without sorning in between?

No. But if you SORN it today, the SORN will be effective for September, and you can then tax it from October.

Remember - VED just works in COMPLETE months. SORN in a month, the whole month's covered. Tax in a month, the whole month's covered. Refund in a month, you get the refund from the end of the month.
