Relocation to Great Yarmouth

Hoping to get some advice...

I currently stay in Aberdeen, due the the downturn in the oil industry I have been made redundant.

There is a possibility that I will be offered a job in Great Yarmouth which would obviously involve relocating with my partner and 3 year old daughter.

I have done some research and it looks like Great Yarmouth isn't the best place to live... (No offence to anyone that does stay there it's just what I've read)

Can anyone recommend any decent places within 30/40 minutes drive from Great Yarmouth. Would need to be a nice friendly place to bring up our daughter with nursery/school.

Any help would be appreciated

Norwich is great, I've lived here all my life and never wanted to move! it's a bit like that. If you're looking at buying here then it's affordable, you can be in the countryside in no time but also have the aspects of living in a reasonable sized city. Need anymore info let me know.

It's a hellhole. It used to be a "cheesy, grubby, seaside town, nice for a day out", now it's a hellhole.

There's some past connection with GtY in the family that's meant that I have a cousin living there.... we didn't mix with that part of the family, they were all a bit rough and loud for us.

Go somewhere else, close by. Lots of nice places. One word of warning though: there's one long/straight road between Norwich/Gt Yarmouth that's a well known accident/death blackspot, so if you can see that and think "that's handy, to be on that route to/from" then just be careful to look at what the current situation is with regard to traffic/accidents along that stretch.

I moved from GY last year, after living there for 10 years, it's OK. .... but I wouldn't move back.
The smaller costal towns and villages are nice, Filby is lovely, but expensive.
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D
  • There is nothing Great about Yarmouth..... Nothing!

I would suggest you look further towards Norwich, it's lovely.

The two long straight bits don't cause a problem, it is the bend in the middle that catches people out :o
  • Great Yarmouth itself isn't very nice but you don't have to travel too far to reach somewhere nice, villages like hemsby and winterton are nice but it all depends what sort of place you want to live in, you're a bit far away I know but my advice would be to take a weekend break somewhere on the broads and check the area out.
  • There is nothing great about Great Yarmouth but the little villages outside are lovely filby,Caister, fleggburough, rollesby all only a short drive from Great Yarmouth.

Per all the advice above really. Yarmouth is a dump, but there're plenty of more rural areas well within your travelling distance, most of rural Norfolk is lovely so if you're happy with being somewhere rural, you can pretty much just put a pin into a map and move to the closest village.

If you do want to be somewhere big, move to Norwich. It's at the longer end of your 30-40 minute commute, but do-able.

The best thing about Great Yarmouth is the road out, but as others have said there are plenty small villages within easy distance, even Lowestoft is a big improvement and it is only ten miles away down the A12.
  • Gorleston is nice, just outside Yarmouth. Or Hopton, Corton, Blundeston are all smaller villages within 15 minutes of Yarmouth.
Yarmouth itself isn't nice. I was raised in Gorleston and am now house hunting and Yarmouth isn't even an option even though I work there.
