If you don't like it why don't you change to a supplier who allows you to pay actual bills on a quarterly basis? (I have no idea if this is an option with your current supplier).
I much prefer to 'smooth' out the payments, and I actually don't mind if they increase my DD a little higher than it should be because I get 2% cashback on whatever the direct debit is with my Santander 1-2-3 account.0
