Joint shareholding

My OH and his mother have a small joint shareholding in Santander. They would like to split this shareholding in half each into their own names. Can this simply be done by writing a joint letter to the registrars with instructions to split and enclosing the share certificates?

If you need to send the share certificates, it might be wise to use registered post and then go for nominee? Or if you want new share certificates, insist they are sent registered at your expense?

I don't think Santander issue certificates any more, it's all done electronically now. I would contact the registrars, Equiniti on 9871 384 2030 (or to keep call costs down you can try 0121 415 7047 or use their online contact form.
Just one point, if this is a small holding, and the holders might want to sell soon, it's not a good idea to split. This is because when you come to sell you'll end up with 2 lots of dealing commission.
Also remember you will need to update the dividend payment instructions.0
