    Couple of points :

1 - locking the router down to mac auth pointless, as this can be easily spoofed.
2 - Any idiot with half a brain and a copy of kali Linux can crack your wifi password, so it could indeed be someone else on your wifi - To negate this, change it to something looooong and complex. And if your router has WPS enabled, disable it, immediately.

I would place money that your machine has downloaded windows 10 in the background and that's where your allowance has gone.. But if it continues, then malware is the next most likely culprit
(you could be an unwilling spambot)

    Run malwarebytes from here :https://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/

Let us know how you go.

While I was away, I put my laptop into a local computer shop to have another issue rectified. When I got it back, the issue hadn't been totally sorted, but he'd substituted Avast for AVG, and Malwarebytes had mysteriously disappeared.

Now back home, I've got rid of Avast and re-installed AVG, and also re-installed Malwarebytes. I've run both and nothing has shown up.

Windows 10 hasn't installed in the background, but as I have installed it on my Asus Transformer, or whatever it's called, Win 10 can't be installed without any personal interaction in the process.

How much do you pay for your 2GB per month? Perhaps you can get a better deal for less....therefore gaining a higher data allowance for the same that you are spending now.

For instance, if you are paying £10 per month for a 2GB allowance, you would be better off with a EE data SIM(reception permitting). EE Data SIM on EE Prepay 6GB Data for up to 90 days £14.99

So £5 per month for 2GB per month or effectively 4GB for the £10 that you might be paying now.

I'm on a 30 day rolling contract with 3 which costs me £5.11 for 2GB per month. I've had the deal for a good number of years but I don't think it's available nowadays. Because of how, where, and when I use my mifi unit, this deal suits me perfectly, or at least it did up until very recently. The SIM I'm using I've had for a number of years too, might a replacement make a difference?

Is that EE data SIM deal at Amazon available all the time? I get not bad data connection via my mobile which is Virgin/EE, but because of the 3 deal, I wouldn't want to drop it if that EE deal isn't always available.

Windows 10 wont install in the background, however, itl will download the files in preparation for being installed.

Personally i would have stuck with Avast over AVG

It's been available for a long time. Perhaps two years.. I don't know if it will be available forever. If it works ok for you, you can buy a few SIMs in advance.
Of course the £5.11 price makes it a slightly more difficult decision. Though if you go over your limit with 3, it could work out expensive.
Likely, your MiFi is only 3G capable. Is it unlocked?

Check for a folder on the C:\ drive called $Windows.~BT Windows "helpfully" pre-downloads Win10 onto your PC without user permission.

I've just bought a new mifi unit, an E5372 which is also 4G capable and is unlocked.

  • We get 15GB a month from 3 for £15.99 on a rolling 30 day contract. EE would be great for the speed but is just too expensive.

That's not right now is it? Three's price is exactly the same. £20 per month. The difference is that Three have offered you a discount. Who is to say that EE don't offer their customers the same?

Would have been an ideal opportunity to test the EE service by purchasing this Huawei E5573s-320 replete with 15GB of data for £29.99(if you give your 30 day notice of cancellation on the day of activation).
Too late to return your MiFi?

We were paying £15 for 10GB but then 3 gave us the extra 5GB for an extra 99p. That the first I've seen EE at a price that's even close, I've got three of these sims so I will keep an eye on them. As I said the EE service is a lot faster.
