C/Heating in winter and what temperature?

Options
Right, as it seems cold now i've been thinking about winter and the central heating.

How long do you have your heating on in the day & evening in winter and what temperature do you set your thermostat to?

If you have thermostatic values on your radiators, do you set them lower in your bedrooms and hall than the rest of the house?

Really interested in your replies, thanks.

I dont have a thermostat and all my radiators seem a different temperature!! I usually have the heating on for half an hour before I get home in winter until bedtime at 10 and then on again at 6am and switch off at 7.30 when I leave.

At the weekend I tend to switch off the standard heating and just switch on when I feed the cat in the morning so its ready for when I get up, then intemittently top uo during the day.

I dont have heating in my hall but the kitchen and dining room are lower than the lounge and spare room. Usually ive heated the spare room to keep my animals warm but they died in the spring so that radiator will hardlybe used anymore.
  • I work odd hours so I put the heating on manually when I need it. During the day I wrap up or just switch on the gas fire in the sitting room for 10 minutes or so. My bills are low because I ration the heat. When I'm old I'd like to think I'd be able to have the heating on all day if I need it but at the moment I do try to economise.

If you take a look at the heating sub forum of the Utilities Forum here:-

    Fuel & other heating

You'll be able to find information (and lots of discussion) about the relative costs of turning your CH on and having to reheat the house from cold versus leaving the CH on low while you are out at work.
