Best way to fill in hole in render?

We have noticed a damp patch on our internal wall – our gutter is leaking and where the water runs down has worn a hole in the render.
Obviously the gutter needs fixed but whilst waiting I do need to fill in the render – the hole is the size of a plum and as deep at least – what’s the best thing to use? Should I use one of the render repair sets – and do I need to fill it with anything first?
Thank you so much

You could just buy a small bag of ready mixed sand/cement and fill up the hole?0

That's what I did with smallish gaps in the rendering of an outbuilding. Wickes sell some ready-to-mix mortar that I saw recommended on a DIY board somewhere. Even for a relative DIY novice like me it was a cinch to mix up and I just troweled a load in, smoothed it off and painted it. Seemed to do the job for the time we were there but I couldn't tell you whether it is still doing so effectively now I'm afraid.0

Thank you - that's very helpful., We're hoping to replace all the doors/windows with double glazing in the next couple of years so it will only be a temp fix (and is somewhere that is not visible other than to us so not fussed about appearances).
Will get to DIY merchant today:eek::eek::eek: LBM 11/05/2010 - WE DID IT - DMP of £62000 paid off in 7 years:jDFD April20170
