Got a 10,000 HUF fine in Budapest Airport - How bad is it?

Personally I prefer to fly knowing the deranged nutter in the next seat whether terrorist or just mentally unwell won't have been able to carry a knife onboard in his carry on

He might not have been able to carry a knife on board but if you are in business or first class, the nutter next to you could just as easily stab you with the metal knife or fork given to them to eat their meal with.
Failing that, they could stab you with a nice shiny stainless steel pen or bludgeon you over the head with a 1 litre glass duty free bottle.0 -
There you go OP - you're on the list already
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.0 -

"Most of us" don't carry knives when we travel . Most us don't carry them on a daily basis going about our regular business either
You say that, but I've done this as well - didn't clear out my usual work backpack before taking it in as hand luggage, and they found the small kitchen knife I used to keep in there for peeling oranges at work! Luckily it was in the UK, and they believed me when I explained it was a mistake, and it just got left there

Wait.
OP : are you certain that this is entirely legitimate? I've never heard of such a practice in this part of the world, and I'd looking for a Hungarian speaker to translate what the paperwork actually says. From Poland...with love.
They are (they're) sitting on the floor.
Their books are lying on the floor.
The books are sitting just there on the floor.0 -

I don't know if it's legitimate or not, I assume it is but they only said these are Hunagarian laws.
I asked someone to translate the papers for me, she was a passenger who spoke both English and Hungarian - it just said I admit I receive the fine and that I need to pay it within 30 days.
This is a small amount so I'm not too worried about it ... I'm more annoyed with the fact I couldn't pay the fine by credit-card or by cash on the spot - the fact I have to wire it is annoying ...
PS My Citibank wire was returned because their bank doesn't accept payments in HKD and Citibank HK cannot send it in HUF currency, so I just used my Halifax account - sent them 12,000 HUF plus 9.50 GBP fee - I think this should cover the amount as wires from Halifax are never received with the whole amount so they would probably get 10,700 - 11,500 HUF, so I sent it as 12,000 HUF just to be on the safe side.0 -

I would advise anyone not to think he/she is "Mr/s Perfect" - people make mistakes, it could happen.
There was a small jar of jam and a small jar of Nutella in the hand luggage along with that knife, so they did not think for a second this was on purpose... I admitted it was a mistake, I already paid the fine, did everything I could from my end.
I really don't know why some people in this thread are trying to play the blame game or what's not - I am quite sure 100% of all human beings are not 'robots' and can and will make mistakes at any point in their lives, it's just prone to happen, it's a fact, it could and will happen, that's all ... no need to be a **** about it.0 -

When I was in America they took a jar of strawberry chocolate spread off me with a small spread knife as 'it might be liquid'. In all honesty though I wouldn't worry as it sounds like its just a fine and not a record:T:T  :beer::beer: to the lil one
