New roof - clay tiles 4 bed detached

Hi,
We have just moved into a detached early 1900s house. It has a clay tile roof that is letting in a bit of water here and there and there are quite a few tiles missing.
Had a roofer around today and whilst he wasn't after doing a re-roof I asked him how much he thought it would cost. The price he came out with made my jaw drop.
I've had a look around the web and the ballpark figure he gave me seems about 5 times higher than anything I've found.
Now, I don't inherently distrust him, but...
As mentioned, the house is a reasonable (not huge) 4 bedroom detached. It has a fairly standard shaped roof, but with two dormer sections projecting forward over the front bedrooms. So, not super simple, but nothing ridiculous. Roof is made up of red clay tiles which I would like to try and keep. Replacements seem to cost around 25p-50p each.
I'm not going to say what the price I was given was yet but would appreciate any suggestions as to how much this might cost.
Thanks,
Chris

Only possible explanation! But seriously....
Today, my missus mentioned this to the decorator we've got in and he didn't bat an eye. Now I'm thinking this is some sort of trades conspiracy!
What's weirder is I now have the same roofer replacing all the tiles on the largest side of the roof, including a hip for around £2k including scaffolding and tiles...0 -
wait until the decorator gives you his £10K bill for painting a couple of rooms....0
-
Ball park figure between £5k & £10k including new felt & battens & scaffolding over the house to make it weathertightI'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0
