Aviva, do I have to tell them about selling my car?

    Yes maybe an email to them was the way to go. The guy on the phone said I could avoid the charge if I did it online but then admitted he could not find a way to do it after I said I had tried that.

    Yes, absolutely the same.

    Sell vehicle, leave it insured.
    Buyer doesn't insure it. Buyer crashes it.
    Vehicle still insured. Insurer legally obliged to pay third party costs. Insurer chases policyholder for allowing somebody not on policy to use vehicle.

    It's all in the small print that formed part of the contract at the inception of the policy - as are the cancellation/amendment charges.

    He'd argue that the policy was void because the font was too small or something equally as daft.


    OP - I'm with Aviva and you do get charged when contacting them by phone, which is why I always use online (where possible). The few times I've rung them, they have amended my policy free of charge. Amazingly, they even added my girlfriend to my policy (as a newly passed driver) for free too! I wasn't sure they were telling the truth until I saw the policy updated.
