JSA disallowed because im on a course!

I have had my JSA disallowed because i started a course which is one day a week and they are saying because im not available for work on that day that i cant claim anything! I cant even claim hardship,im so upset right now and annoyed because they said they told me last week that if i carry on on the course then i will not get paid which they didnt tell me because i would of just packed the course in then! I dont know what to do or where to start to ask anybody.:(

What kind of course is it? Where and what are you studying and for what qualification?

Were you told you were disallowed by letter? Can you say exactly what was written in the letter?

Did you ask permission before you started the course?

I cannot believe that you are not entitled to JSA since you can claim JSA and work less than 16 hrs a week.

You can also do a part time course as long as you adhere to your job seekers agreement and are willing to give up your course if a job becomes available. You need to challenge the decision. it should tell you how to do this on your letter saying that your JSA has been disallowed. You have got such a letter haven't you rather than an advisor just telling you this?

I started the course before i claimed jsa,its one day a week ive said i am avaialbe every day except tuesday,its an accounting course and i will get an accounting qualifcation at the end which will lead to a good job,the letter states that my committment should be revised dont saying anything about being disallowed or sanctioned!

So who told you that you have been disallowed? Can you type the reason as stated on the letter or post a picture of the letter with your details removed?

I am sorry its a very terrible system - I have volunteered for a food bank for for over 2 years now and your story is a common one. You are sadly a victim of your own honesty.
The truth is if you had said nothing and the course didn't clash with your sign on day they are very unlikely to ever discover the issue.
Now they have stopped your benefits you could tell them you have cancelled the course and try a rapid reclaim and continue your course in secret, its not a fool proof plan and you will still have to wait for your rapid reclaim to come through...

What ever happens go to your local CAB and ask them for a referral to your local food bank its worth going to get some help because which ever way you go now your facing as least a few weeks with no income...

If you can continue your course its a shame not to as course are a great way of gaining the skills to gain employment...
It may also be worth while your on rapid reclaim trying to apply for as many part time positions as you can and maybe see if that route is fast than a new claim.

And then what? Make up a story when she can't go for an interview on the Tuesday? Turn down every job offer that requires working on a Tuesday? Fail all the interviews on purpose? How long do you that will go on until she is sanctioned anyway?

Thanks for the replies,i have said i will give up the course because if i dont i wont get anything,the only letters i have had from them i one to say i am entitled to jsa and one saying my committment needs revising,the lady at the job centre today told me they have disallowed it,if i can i'll put the letter up.

im not being nasty when i say that there is a 3rd option and that would be to get a part time job to work round the course,lots of people advertising for part time xmas temps atm

Hi, Go back to J.C and tell them you will still look for work and be able to go for a job e.t.c on your course day.
If that happens then you have to do extra work on you course.
In the job club were i help i tell people you have to do what they ask you to do ( i help them do that if i can ), cause all they have to do then is press a button and you are sanction.

Its a common issue, years ago they cancelled my claim for doing a 5 hour a week course(which was over 2-3 days a week) because they claimed it would mean I would have to revise at home and do assignments whey they claimed were 35 hours a week therefore I was doing 40 hours a week at college so would of got a grant and loan.

I was 18 and naive then, I didnt realise that 2 members of staff at same time backing each other up was on purpose.
