recovering files, pics etc from 'windows.old' folders?

Options
Upgraded to windows 10, no likey, so went back to 7..

However, it seems #10 setup files etc still lurking on laptop, as hard disc now almost full? was 2/3 before..

I cannot seem to find uninstall for windows 10, nor any of the old files?

  • You could try the MS provided disk cleanup. In file explorer right click the drive and select properties. Disk cleanup is on the window that appears. You may need to select system files in the window that appears after you click the cleanup button.

Yes, disk cleanup will remove the old windows folder as kwikbreaks suggests. Visual guide to the steps here:

I am after my 'old' photos, documents first, before i get rid of windows.old- or is the latter just the OS bits..?

Why not open the Windows.old folder and see if the user files are copied there? (I suspect they are not).

Did a all files search of pc, and there is a c. 2gb unspecified 'file' with approx 20 digit name in this location..

any clues what it is for? safe to delete? (I have truncated file name, for privacy!)

Only a few (much smaller) files are duped, that's down to me backing up in the past..

  • At least you managed to roll back to 7! Mine did and now will not start up without blue screening. Have to wipe the whole thing and reinstall the OS.

Wish I'd never bothered updating! If it ain't broke don't try and fix it, updating always makes things worse in my experience. I now have a computer that might as well be a brick.

Clean install or not at all.

I downloaded & installed a 'new' version of windows7, from one of the pc mag sites..

The 'roll back' option had seemingly expired.. so much for making things easy!
