Eon switching - end of fix

Hello there,
I'm a bit confused, I've received emails reminding me that I'm coming to the end of my fixed deal with Eon 7th November. However the emails seem to contradict themselves when it talks about exit fees.
On the info section about my current tarif it says £5 (each) exit fee if cancelled before end date.
However lower down the email it says that if you switch to another provider there will be no exit fee so long as the new supplier lets them know about the switch before 9th December.
So I'm confused, when am I meant to switch? Before the end of the fix? After the end date? Or time it a few weeks before so the switch happens around the same date?
I've never switched from a deal with exit fees so I've not had to think about it before. (I know it's only a tenner, but this is MSE after all!)
Thanks in advance

You can switch now without penalty. Your new supplier manages the switch and provided it contacts E.oN by the date stated you will remain on your present tariff until the switch goes through. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Hiya FreddieFrugal,
This is what we call Price Protection, The Price Protection window is from the date on the renewal letter until 20 working days after your contract end date. If you decide to leave E.ON during this time we’ll automatically protect your prices and bill you on up until the final day on either your current price or the new one, depending on which one is cheaper for you.
If it's all within the window, then there won't be an exit fee applied.
