I contacted First Utility a couple of times in June by e-mail through their website to ask for a refund of £30 that I was in credit for, no reply was received, I then telephoned them in July and they said they would issue the refund in 6 weeks, I have now telephoned them again and they have told me that I am in credit for £74 but they will not issue me a refund until they have received an up to date meter reading, I give them my meter reading every month so there is no excuse for this, it seems to me that if they take 6 weeks to issue a refund then my meter readings can never be up to date for them to issue a refund, I think they are taking the P, has anyone else had this problem.

If you have provided them with a reading then their computers will still assess that £74 is too small a credit to account for winter. They have issued the appropriate amount - £0.
If the £30 was at an annual review then it makes more sense to have the direct debit reduced by £2.50 rather than go around raising costs sending out cheques for silly amounts.
If you don't like paying by 'fixed' monthly direct debit then alternative payment options are available - you may prefer to choose one of them (although some can be charged at a higher price.)0 -
I agree with Nada666. Without knowing the remaining length of your contract, and monthly DD, it is impossible to provide any sensible advice. Indeed, FU, on its website, cautions against requesting credit back. FWiW, with winter approaching, I am a couple of £00s in credit with a monthly DD of £60 per month. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Whilst I, on the other hand, have just been informed by E.On that my monthly DD is going to increase by £20 a month whilst they're refunding the £180 credit that has accrued on my account over winter! !!!!!!!0

When was the annual review date? From E.oN's website:
If you're in credit by £5 or more at the time of your annual review and we've had an accurate meter reading within the last six months we'll automatically refund you. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Go to Twitter and search #worstutility
Was a user a few months ago who'd had problems with them, in the end they basically intercepted all people expressing an interest in joining, and put a lot of them off by sharing/retweeting (whatever its called) all the complaints etc, it put me off too. Worth an hour of your time0
