Script to kill ads

Options
I’m not too sure how to ask this question, but I’ll have a go anyway.

A number of years back I had a laptop running Windows 7 and somewhere along the line I got hold of a script which was inserted into the registry and it blocked an awful lot of ads

I’ve not got a new laptop running Windows 10 and I’m trying to trace down that script again and find out how to insert it into the Windows 10 registry. (One of the most annoying ads I’ve come across is a massive drop down one on Yahoo when I go to check my mail.)

Any advice welcomed and as always many thanks
Kevin

Until the only content remaining is subscription. If the majority take up ad blocking free content will eventually vanish.

No- what will happen is that businesses will realise that people would be happy with small, unobtrusive text adds ..
If sites have these, then they get added to my exception list in addblock.

What they need to realise, is that the current trend for massive flash autoplay video adds, or ones that mask the full screen and hide the close button are the scurge of the internet.

And that if they decide to close their site because they insist on this assault of my eyeballs then that is a good thing.

I accept that free content is supported by adds, and don't mind them as long as they don't fall into the category above.

If they do, then they will be blocked. It is the company losing out from revenue.
When they realise this and alter their approach, the internet, and indeed the world will be a little bit better
  • Very admirable. Most that install an adblocker will simply block all ads regardless though.

I have to say I agree. However, my own site has one single small banner ad, and it's at the bottom of the page content. It won't cover content at any point and I have chosen it as a happy medium between having no ads at all, and having some form of income generation on the page.

I'm not a fan of text ads, and I certainly would never go down the route of inline ads (the ones which highlight words and open a popup when you hover on them) as those are just as bad as the full cover ones in my eyes.

The content is what I want people to see on the site. If they get to the bottom of the page, see the ad and click, then that's a bonus (at least I know they've read the article!). But I also agree that it's a personal choice. Most are happy with some ads, but some people don't want any. If you don't want any, then use the ad blockers or a HOSTS file. I certainly wouldn't want people not to visit because there are ads, but I won't force anyone to view them either.

If it ends up that there is no revenue because everyone is blocking ads, then I'll probably keep going simply as a hobby (costs are low as I coded the site and generate content myself), but I can imagine there are a lot of sites who rely on the income generated by their ads. It will be interesting to see how they would react.
