PPI on Credit card

Hi - I hope you can help....

A friend of mine said that they have been offered a small amount of PPI refund from credit card company to recover the amount paid at that time.

That PPI was mis-sold when signing up to a credit card at a service station whereby it was strongly encouraged despite them being a 17YO student at that time . At the time they only really signed up to get the free gift offered straight away on sign up. Not expecting to get the credit card approved (age 17 ish) they could have written in their DOB as such to make them old enough to get the card. The card got through any checks and was approved and posted through. This card was then used for the next 10ish years with PPI on for some of that time. It was then later paid off and cancelled.
When doing an self check they later found that PPI was paid and they were due a refund. A complaint was sent, they were refused and then later approved for this small amount. No further contact with company or ombudsman has been made.

Questions are:
1. Will the DOB inaccuracy cause potential issues during the claim - could that person be found fraudulent despite being young and impressionable etc?
2. This PPI I am told was definitely mis-sold, are they likely to have success in gaining a higher amount back than the small amount they were offered back by the provider. i.e. will they get a compensation amount?

thanks for your help

  • Doesn't sound like missold to me. It would appear that your "friend" lied about her age to obtain the credit card. Why should they expect compensation for lying?

Yes, it would have been fraud. Unfortunately, being young is not an excuse and being impressionable even more so since that suggests they were being told to lie....
