Does comping increase cold calls, spam and mailouts?

Hi I'm a newbie and want to give comping a go but one thing is putting me off. If I provide my personal details to so many companies will I get bombarded with cold calls, spam and mailouts?

I've already set up a comping email address and facebook profile but there isn't a lot I can do to change my phone/addresss,

How has everyone else got on?

Yes, you do get lots of emails etc. You've done the right thing with a separate email account.
I use a cheap PAYG mobile phone for comping and I don't get that many calls.
I do get some leaflets etc through the post but they go into recycling bin.
For me the prizes outweigh the drawbacks.
    Good luck :)

If you are fussy about what you enter you should get very little junk, there are many competitions that do not require your postal address or a phone number anyway

Some people have a mobile just for comping.

You will get gets loads of spam emails, at a guess I would say I get 200/400 per day.

I also do get cold calls to my comping phone, I very rarely answer it and then check the number of who called me on Tellows.

I also get a few catalogues (Hotter shoes is a bugga) and holiday letters, those go in the recycling no biggie really.

You have to take the good with the bad :)

  • Thanks all. Have a cheap phone I use for festivals. If I can find the sim that came with it that might be the solution.

As above, cold calls and postal mail not really an issue, although I have a phone I use for comping and people I don't want to give my "proper" mobile to.
Spam emails - squillions. However careful you are about ticking/unticking boxes, it's inevitable some will get through and sell the details on. A comping email is a must.

I think the term 'spam' is a bit misleading - it's not like you're gonna get lots of dodgy emails about e***tile dysfunction or selling you via**a (abbreviating cos it'll prob block it out anyway thinking I'm a spammer lol).

What you will get is a TONNE of newsletters. Every now and again I have a major blitz and unsubscribe from the older or more persistent ones. As above, just be extremely careful not to sign up for anything in the first place. There can be some sneaky tickboxes!

I very rarely get phone calls - I give my mobile number out loads and have been comping for around 6 years. Again, rarely post. Seem to get several cruise brochures or business/finance/money industry brochures.

    Good luck.

I seem to have got onto a spam list somehow - and I thought I was pretty careful about what I entered. I get several Nigerian 419 scams, buy Viagra, make your willy bigger, you've won $10,000000 dollars, Paypal, Ebay and bank phishing emails per day. I've only recently found them all in my isp's spam filter box.
