My apologies if this sounds really thick ... but I've lost the USB lead to download photos from camera to computer.
I've found a lead that seems to fit, but the computer won't recognise it,
does this mean I have to buy a Sony lead?
The camera is a Sony Cybershot DSC-W550. Many thanks.

Many thanks for that, I think my laptop has a card function (Dell).
(From a 75 year old Silver Surfer who didn't grow up with technology)

USB leads should be interchangeable, its kind of the idea of them.

Don't know if you can try another or alternatively pick up a generic one first from a pound shop.

Yes, many laptops do have a card reader, if yours does you should just be able to put the card in the slot and your computer should pick it up.

Should be, but need to check , since a number of camera manufacturers have come up with unique variants of the usb micro sized connector at the camera end

My Sony RX100 compact camera uses a standard microUSB cable to charge the battery and to transfer data!

The DSC-W550 that the OP asked about does seem to use a proprietary connector at the camera end, but you can get replacement cables on eBay for £2.95.
