Ipod update photos lost

DD has installed new update on her ipod. Something happened halfway through and she had to restart the process. Now all her photos have disappeared and it doesnt look like she has had icloud storage turned on for them.
Any ideas of how she can retrieve them ??

    Just restore them all from the last backup she made.

    she doesnt seem to hv had back up set up !!

    Basically tried to install update and then had to leave for school half way through which totally messed up her ipod !
