Santander - get cashback on more than my credit limit

I have a credit limit on my Santander credit card of £3,200. I shall be moving soon and wish to buy some new furniture from John Lewis which will come to about £5,000.

Is it possible to buy some items for £3,000, wait a few days till the amount appears, clear the balance and then buy the remainder?

This would enable me to take advantage of the 2% cashback on the whole amount.

You could also install the phone app and purchase part then transfer money to the card on the spot via the app and then compete the second part of your purchase.

Done this lots of times on big nights out and big shops. Just check the available limit on the card details section of the app/website

Can you do that with Santander? I've never worked out how. Other banks, yes, but not Santander.

In hind sight think I logged into my account via the desktop site on my phone
  • Yes you could do that. The only problem I find with paying Santander CC early is they will only let you pay the total of last months balance + £100 at a time. Fine if the last bill was a lot, but if it wasn't, to pay it off early, you might need to do numerous transactions.

Currently, the Santander 1|2|3 card details on their website says:-

    Cashback
You could earn a maximum of £3 a month cashback in each of the categories below:

    • 1% cashback at all major supermarkets (on spend of up to £300 per month)
    • 2% cashback at all major department stores (on spend of up to £150 per month)
    • 3% cashback at all major petrol stations, and on National Rail and Transport for London travel, including Santander Cycles (on combined spend of up to £100 per month).

So I can't see how that would work. Mind you, I only remember an overall spend limit of £300pm when I took out my card a couple of months ago - has it changed?

Ah, just read Martin's blog and found what the changes are to be. So the limit of £300 spend on transport costs should remain as the only cap for cashback. For the time being, anyway.

Thankfully, anyone who got the card before 16 September 2015 will see the fee rise but will continue with their current uncapped cashback limits (except fuel which continues to be capped at £9/month). So if it works for you now, it’s still likely to continue to work for you. However, it’s unlikely to be worth it for anyone applying for a new card
