Coolpix s3500 not charging

Hi,
I have the above camers that has not been used for a while so the battery is completely dead, its now been on charge for 36 hrs with no effect . After a quick google it seems theres an issue with this and a firmware update but how can i update it if it won't even turn on ?

    Can you connect it to your PC with a USB cable to enable you to carry out the firmware update?

    i can connect it but as the battery is dead its not switching on.

    Have you read the Nikon COOLPIX Updating Camera Firmware instructions?

    They state that you need either a fully charged battery or a mains charger:
    To upgrade the camera firmware, you will need:
    One of the following camera power sources:
    - An AC adapter
    - A battery or batteries with sufficient charge to complete the update
    Can you perhaps remove the battery from the camera and try switching it on under mains power only?
