Thanks all,
It's actually one of these, posted on HUKD a couple of days ago, I'm picking it up tomorrow:

Yes, I know it's not the best machine in the world, but the price sold it to me as I only need it for basic use, and that's why I was thinking of spending a bit on an SSD. I have a higher spec Toshiba (i5, 6gb RAM etc) but it is now almost 4 years old and freezing/shutting down constantly and is very noisy and hot and I can't be without a computer right now if that packs up.
I expect it to invalidate the warranty but the idea of keeping/replacing the HDD if necessary is a good one, yes. I guess there's lots of Youtube videos on this as well. I have a external 500GB 3.0 hard drive to back it up on and I hope that a new machine will come with all of the disks.
Still a bit nervous about doing it though, might get a tech minded friend to assist at least!0 -
clone it as I described above , save the 1t in a safe place , if machine fails replace the 1t and return to Tesco for repair
windows 10 comes with a recovery partition , and a reset feature , have they started issuing discs yet?
bet you get told to go to Microsoft (on another PC) and d/load win 10 if you need to do a re install0 -
Why not put the SSD in the Toshiba you already have, give it a bit of a clean and go back to a clean install of Windows? Seems daft to replace it with a lower spec machine.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -
Why installing an SSD on an unused laptop as the thread title suggests? What's the point if you don't use it?0

I think the OP means "unused" in the sense of "brand new".Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
