Advice on Buying Please

I am thinking of buying something which will be a few hundred pounds. Seller has had 1 neg out of 20, but that was as a buyer, has only sold 1 item so far which seems to have gone well.

How best can I protect myself, it will be more than the £150 paypal protection.

I have no reason to doubt the person at all, but a few helpful pointers would be appreciated.

Cheers

Seller only has one feedback for selling, and only has 20 feedback total? I'd steer clear.

He won't be able to offer £500 protection with feedback that low anyway. But use a credit card for the paypal payment if you must buy.

  • hmm, depends on what caused that 1 neg they received as a buyer, i would be cautious but no serious reason to run away

this person has only got round to selling 1 item, so what! everyone starts somewhere

It's not the sought of thing that gets scammed, it's a musical instrument.

I might see how he/she feels about collection/cash
  • what did they do to get that neg?

Hard to judge, reading into what was written, I would guess he paid didn't like what was received, asked for a refund wasn't happy with the offer.

This is the problem, before starting to read this forum I'd have just dived in and bid, forums like this one (no citicism intended) tend to give a distorted, negative picture about Ebay/Paypal.
  • that only happens as the negative things are only ever highlighted, i mean who wants to hear of a transaction which went smooth cos thats the way it should be. so if i posted saying i paid monday got item on wednesday and it was as described people on here would be saying "So what??"

Equally, there have been people coming to this forum to ask the best way to post to Nigeria

Yes, you get a negative view, but also an added sense of caution, at least I hope! That's something we all need, bearing in mind the token protection that ebay themselves afford us.

Good idea..i think it would be perfectly reasonable to ask to collect a musical instrument as ti could be badly damaged if couriered wrongly and a new seller might not understand how to send it safely with all the correct insurance.

If the seller says no to collection, which of course they are perfectly entitled to do, then I would seriously consider not buying. If you must buy, and this will go cheaply as many buyers wouldn't risk it so you will have little competition, do as fay says and make sure you only pay by paypal fully backed by a credit card.
