Lpg still worth it?

With oil getting cheaper is it still about half price for lpg? And you get more miles per gallon with lpg than petrol or desiel.

I'm looking for a larger car and seen a few lpg cars on gumtree, is it worth it?

If it's already been done, it's usually worth it. It's more worthwhile the worse the car is on fuel too.

On lpg the car will have a slightly (~10%) worse fuel economy, but the price is around a 50% reduction so you should save money overall. You can even run on petrol if you can't get to lpg. You will lose a bit of boot space for the additional tank though.

It's less likely to be worth doing the conversion yourself.
  • Depends on your mileage etc. LPG is a by-product of the oil industry so the price varies roughly according to the oil price, there's less duty so it is usually going to be about 50% of the cost of petrol/diesel.

As petrol/diesel is a bit cheaper at the moment the savings in £ and pence are lower but the percentage saving is still around the same as it was.

Who said you get better MPG than petrol or diesel?

You will get less per gallon on LPG than you get on the same vehicle running on petrol.

You may well get more miles per pound spent and hopefully that will continue.

But other things need to be considered not least of which is valve seat recession caused by running on LPG so you need to factor in FlashLube.
  • I looked a while back and the drop in prices seemes to have missed the LPG, but maybe it was just a delay as the prices seem cheaper now.

Quite a wide variety in prices it seems, from less than 50p per L to almost 70p per L within 20 miles of me.

  • Buying a used LPG car you can be buying into Pandoras box of problems, i certainly wouldn't pay more for a LPG converted car, preferring to have my own choice in car converted...two currently.

As BigJL mentions, flashlube is just one problem, you have no idea unless you are a good judge of character whether the previous owner has been maintaining the vehicle and LPG system properly nor if they've topped up the flashlube in the last 3 years until the day the advert went in.
Some engines (German especially) are pretty well bombproof and flashlube is merely there as a belt and braces approach, some other engines (Japanese) have soft valve seats so need a good and constantly running flashlube system.

Its ironic that some German engines have valves made out of top grade steel yet their timing chains and tensioners are made of cheese.
And thereby lies another problem, cars running on LPG run very clean, the oil will stay clean for ages, would that encourage owners of engines with timing chains of cheese to leave the ridiculous oil change intervals even longer...assuming the car has a dipstick at all that is and the owner can be bothered with the herculean effort of checking said oil anyway.

At the end of the day ask yourself why would someone sell a perfectly good car (with a large engine probably driving through a proper auto box, and not some snotty dual clutch thingy with a short life expectancy), that gives Diesel economy.
