Feliway keep changing their plug - arrggghhhhh!!!!

Just a rant and warning.

We got two Feliway diffuser plugs last October, when we got our kitty. A few months back, we had to replace the plugs with the new shape ones, as new refills were only compatible with the new plugs.

We threw the old plugs away, but now I seriously wish we hadn't... There's a note on the Zooplus site to say the new shape diffusers have been withdrawn from sale and Feliway have reverted to the old ones!! So now it looks like I have to buy old plugs, again!

:mad::mad::mad:

Unfortunately we're stuck. Our kitty is very noticeably more stressed and scatty when the refills run out, and calms down within a couple of days when we replace them.

Is there any alternative (brand) to Feliway? I am so annoyed with them right now. It's an expensive enough product as it is.

  • Pet remedy also do a plug in diffuser which works out cheaper and maybe worth a try.

    Cheaper on Amazon though

  • Were the 'old' plugs more than six months old when you chucked them? If so you're meant to replace them every six months anyway.

If they were less than six months old I'd contact Feliway to complain, you discarded the 'old' plugs due to the 'new' refills being incompatible and requiring new plugs - they've now backtracked and gone back to their old product so may supply you with the plugs as a goodwill gesture, if you don't ask you don't get!

The 'old' old plugs would have been about five months old when we binned them. I didn't realise they were meant to be replaced every six months. :o

I sent Feliway a complaint email earlier so maybe they'll offer something and, if not, it made me feel better. :)

Wish we could wean kitty off Feliway but don't think that's an option. When he's stressed he has a behaviour that's upsetting to see - he rolls round biting at his own back legs. :( Not hard - doesn't draw blood or even hurt himself or anything. It's definitely behavioural, not physical, as we can distract him from doing it with toys etc. When the Feliway refills run out he does this more than usual though. :(
  • Must admit I do use them for slightly longer than the 6 months but they do degrade over time, the plastic prongs at the back seem to melt a bit and go a bit gungy!

I haven't tried pet remedy but I believe they can smell a bit due to the valerian in it, so I'd rather stick with Feliway as it definitely works.

Have you considered Zyklene, it's a veterinary supplement that's added to food (supposedly tasteless!) http://www.animeddirect.co.uk/zylkene-capsules-pack-of-20-75mg.html

If you did get on with it then it's cheaper to buy in bulk and there may be cheaper places than animed, I stick with them as a trusted seller and the bonus of free delivery when ordering low value things. Also it says one capsule is for up to 10kg of animal so you may only need half a capsule making it even cheaper.
  • I think Zylkene is a good product but needs to be dosed at a higher amount than the 75mg and certainly not lower. I buy the 450mg capsules and split them into 3 doses to achieve this
  • Animed direct appear to still have the new style refill for sale on their site http://www.animeddirect.co.uk/feliway-refill-48ml.html

Cool, thanks! I'll stock up on refills that will last us until we've had the new plugs over six months. :)

Thanks for the tip about Zyklene but the 450mg says its for 20-40kg dogs...(!)

Zylkene is not a drug as such and it is one of the products ( unlike many others such as flea treatments ) where the ingredients for dog and cat versions are EXACTLY the same.
I know lots of people who have used it and the consensus is that results are much better with a higher dose than the 75mg 'cat' version.

Bit like herbal 'medicines' for humans? :)
