    The BBC website says:

In fact, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders stresses: "The EU operates a fundamentally different system to the US - with all European tests performed in strict conditions as required by EU law and witnessed by a government-appointed independent approval agency."
Still, the American regulator now says it'll start testing other diesels. And the German government also says it'll check whether it's happening in Europe.

OP how is this going to affect you?

I am 99% sure sure it will have no effect on VED rates, for cars already on the road (and that assumes they have been up to no good in the European market).

You are jumping the gun somewhat.

Although yes it might not affect me in the short or long term but I'd like understand the possibilities and potential problems.

Hopefully as others have said, the testing is done differently and shouldn't impact euro drivers. But I'm not entirely convinced euro drivers will be completely unaffected.

Just seen news, VW reveal 11 million cars could be affected.

Jeepers - Bernstein: Diesel is doomed - City firm Bernstein has predicted that the Volkswagen crisis will end the era of diesel cars in Europe.

11 million worldwide! It was 480,000 just in the US, but VW themselves admitting it could be all diesel cars Jettas, Golfs, Audi a3s, passat.

Its being compared to the the libor scandal, what VW has done, this is big. They're big enough to fix issues with the cars but cant be much left of VW after this.

Banks have continued post the Libor scandal.

BP has continued post Deepwater Horizon.

VW will doubtlessly do the same.

One article I read said that they would be passing the information over to the relevant EU bodies and it would be for them to decide whether they had done any wrong in the EU.

This kind of practice isnt unknown though. Similar happens with MPG claims. Of those "economy" cars researched, there was a difference of around 25-30% between the "official" MPG figures and the actual MPG figures. With larger engines the gap is less as apparently its harder for them to fine tune to bring a better result.
