Replacing a shower yourself

I have an old gainsborough 2000 shower that doesn't really heat water anymore except in summer. Looking inside one of the wires has caused the plastic to melt where it is screwed into the junction. Also, the main switch to it in the airing cupboard has jammed permanently on. I have opened it and cannot see any apparent damage, burns etc.

I am reasonably competent at most DIY so my question is how hard is it to replace the shower and switch myself ? If not, what would it cost to get an electrician to do the job (probably best) ? As far as I know there is no RCD but that's not essential.

Honestly, water + electric together is something I won't risk personally.

Work on electric showers is notifiable, isn't it?
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

    Can I replace a 9kw shower with an 8kw ?
  • You'd need to check the rating of the existing cable (which depends on how it's been installed - the rating is significantly lower if the cable runs through insulation) and not assume it's already adequate for the existing shower (which may have been installed incorrectly).

Most manufacturer's instructions will require an RCD now.

Also the water inlet on the new shower probably won't be in exactly the same place so you may need to do a bit of jiggering about with the pipe.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.

    No.

Installing a new RCD might be.

Going to get a spark. A bit over my head but thanks for the advice.
  • Get a sparky in while I have swapped like for like showera in the past this needs some further investigation due to the seized shower swith and melted plastic.

Replacing an electric shower is not notifiable. Installing a new shower circuit would be.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Ok, so I can't get ANYONE interested in this job. I have used rated people.com and Mybuilder.com and have had no response for 3 days.
