We have no mains gas and so installed a Woodwarmer 5kw - best thing ever in the entire house.

If you burn the stove at the correct heat then the glass is self-cleaning. otherwise a quick rub with a piece of damp newspaper dipped in ash does the trick. If the stove run at a low temperature the glass will get black - not the fault of the stove.

I bought a vacuum cleaner to suck out the ash. It's best to leave a bed of ash for the fire to be good and I only usually vacuum it out every three or four days in winter, and then not fully.

During the rubbish winter last year I was able to get boiling water / hot food by just putting a pan on top of the stove. The heat is terrific, certainly more than hot enough.

Make sure you use the secondary and primary air sources properly to get the fire to burn at the correct temperature.

We have plenty of local wood and barns to store it in.

It's so much better than central heating as it doesn't dry the air!

I lived with a log burner stove for over ten years, it was dirty, the wood took up space, had to be ordered 12 months in advance and *someone* had to get down on their hands and knees and clean it out and take the ash tray outside without spilling any of the ash in the house.
I now have a Gazco gas burner and it's millions times better. It uses batteries in the remote control and wall mounted controller but apart from that it's easy peasy.
The log burning thing is just a trend and people will eventually realise it's not fun but a real chore.
ETA: The vacuum could not be used to get ash out of log burner because it was too either too hot, ven the morning afterwards, or would clog the filters.

We've got a gas fire in one room as well as the central heating but we decided on a stove as an emergency back-up and for occasional use (and because it looks great in the room).

It's so easy to use and produces a really nice heat so we tend to turn the CH off and use the stove instead. We use it far more than we expected to.
