What happens if card is used?

I prefer to use paypal when I pay over the internet especially with new websites because with paypal you dont have to give your credit card or debit card details.
I want to get a subscription membership on a website that doesnt have paypal. If I want it I have to pay by debit card. What happens if there is fraud or they use my debit card to take more money than authorised or more money is taken at a later date?
I dont have too much worry about this website if I did I would just not use it. But it got me thinking what happens with fraud? I phoned my bank and asked if I can have a zero overdraft limit so nothing can every be spent that I dont have (I dont have more than £100 balance most times). But they said that even if the overdraft limit is taken away they cannot set an account so it never goes overdrawn. This surprised me.
So what happens if a debit card is used for fraud and even more money than is in the account gets taken?

The obvious answer is to use a credit card so that it's not your money that is being taken.
  • My question is what happens with a debit card.

Have a word with Nationwide - I have an old Flex account with the overdraft facility switched off and they have bounced one payment when I forgot to move money to cover it.

Read the Terms and Conditions for your specific debit card, which will specify what happens.

Try googling Nationwide Flex instead of just repeating inane comments!

You report it to your bank as a fraudulent transaction. They will refund the money (sooner or later).

Im new here so dont want to upset anyone. I didnt think it would be a problem to repeat my question if the answers however well intended dont answer the question.
Quoting my opening post "If I want it I have to pay by debit card." So replying to the answer to use a credit card I repeated the question is about debit card. I dont want to change banks or change to Nationwide either.
I hoped someone may be able to explain their understanding of consumer rights if debit card details are used for fraud. If this isnt the place to ask then I wont post more.

You should probably ask the bank all these questions.

Naturally if someone commits fraud using your debt card you would call the bank telling them that you suspect a transaction is fraud and you didn't authorise it. The bank will act and investigate.
