Hi,
I'm looking at buying a secondhand tomtom with lifetime maps.
Does anyone know if the lifetime map updates is registered to the original owner or the device. I wouldn't want to buy a secondhand one only to find that I can't get the lifetime map updates.

I would assume that you'd just link it up with tom tom connect on computer and it would be fine.
It's the devices lifetime afterall, not the owners.Mortgage remaining: £42,260 of £77,000 (2.59% til 03/18 - 2.09% til 03/23)
Savings target June 18 - £22,281.99 / £25,0000 -
When I used to update my TomTom on the computer when I still used it you have to sign in with a username and password to TomTom connect so it's possible that it will stay with the username. I certainly wouldn't be giving you my email address and password that may or may not be used for other accounts.
You may be able to change the details but that would require the assistance of the seller.0 -
With Garmin, you have to register name & address, etc, so the answer is probably "No", unless the seller will give you that (unlikely) or the maker will agree.0

There's some information in this thread on the Tomtom forum, particulary the official response from Tomtom quoted in the last post.

These devices are so cheap these days why wouldn't you just buy a new one?
Can't see you saving much by buying 2nd hand.0 -

Well I saved £95 on a £135 nearly new TomTom with lifetime maps (which update fine) when I picked up one on EBay (to be fair the advert was very ambiguous and it took a few questions to determine the actual model).0 -
Another vote for buying new.
The "saving" from buying used is so small as to make buying used a non MSE idea, no warranty, older tech etc.
You can get them on all kinds of special offers.
A mate bought a new one a few weeks agai and was asked to trade in his old one, working or not, and got £30 off
He only ever goes for the cheapest one going, his last one was 5yrs old.
Even Halfords has them starting at £79:990 -
The big problem is that the "older tech" TomToms actually work and are customisable whereas the new ones are pretty much bolted down to what TomTom say you can use.
Lifetime maps are linked to the machine, I have one that has been linked to 3 different e-mail addresses with no problems. That previous link was to the old system where you could purchase lifetime maps or buy units with a lifetime map offer and not newer units that now come with lifetime mapping.0
