More cheap electric car deals: Renault Zoe

  • Thanks. I certainly think EVs are on the cards as a serious consideration next year.

The logistics of the nearest dealer being >> the max theoretical range is an issue, I suspect the first dealer that can organise a free transporter to get the car to us and either agree to servicing taking place at another brand's dealership (or just transport the car back when needed for free) will get the business.

Only bizarre thing - reading the small print you need mobile phone coverage for the charge point to work??

o2 GPRS (2.5G) phone coverage to be exact. The installer of your free charge point will check this. It's also for stuff like setting the charging schedule and heating, and for the car to report back when the battery's full. And software updates etc.
    Silly questions...
    1. Do all EVs have a 13a trickle charge option... Most places have a 13a supply somewhere... Even friends and family.

Depends on car. The Zoe is very inefficient at this low charge rate, and you don't get the cable as standard. They'll charge almost £500 for one. Most do though. In many cases, you'd take 8 hours to charge. If you're there for 8 hours, fine, if not, you'd be quicker driving to a proper charger!
    2. Do all EVs work in all charging stations? Not talking about "for free" - can I - you know - pay money and buy electricity from any charging station for any EV or do I need the right type of plug / cable / etc and hence there are 15 manufacturers each with their own charging socket type?

There are 3 or 4 types at the mo, and most 'charging stations' will cover most of these. It takes a bit of learning for your own specific vehicle, I guess it's kindof like looking for super unleaded. Plenty of apps and maps around to help you. Definitely be aware of what's around you before buying.
    3. How reliable are charging stations? Our nearest is currently over 60 miles away - but I've read it's hit and miss at to whether they work, some needing a "reboot". Nothing worse than being stranded 60 miles from home / 120 miles from your main dealer and being out of charging options.

    I have no experience yet...

gzoom - DSG Renault seem to be leading the way with the Zoe, and actually have staff that know about them unlike lots of other dealers. If they're handy to you I'd buy and service with them. I've no affiliation with them!
