Rear-ended at low speed - is it worth getting the car looked at by a garage?

It is obvious that driving is never 100% predictable and distance should be maintained - most people wouldn't want to steam through wildlife just so that the person behind can go at higher speeds. You did the right thing and have no control of anything idiotic going on behind your vehicle.

    Thank you.

As it happens, there were 5 adult pheasants in the group and 3 of these were in front of my car. Not only would it not have been pretty, it would have horrified my son (12 years) had I ploughed straight through them because he was sitting in the passenger seat at the time.

I am sure your 12 yr old son would be less horrified than you think. Unless he is one of those that think steak comes from a supermarket. Could have been a valuable life lesson.

Its simple if someone in front of you stop suddenly then you do the same and the distance you have in front should cover your reaction time so you don't hit them.

    That's my feeling, too.

When driving, I leave a decent gap between my car and the one in front and I react to what's happening in front of my car, not what might be happening further along - unless it's something plainly obvious such as a lorry having jack-knifed on a motorway or dual carriageway, for example.

But the steak that I eat does come from a supermarket. (Waitrose to be exact).
I know this because I get it from there myself.

I received a call from the other driver's insurers today, to say their client had admitted responsibility for the accident and asking if I would care to deal directly with them rather than through my own insurers. I've accepted and have let my own insurers know, for information. Now it's just a case of getting my usual garage to check the car out for any damage and keeping my fingers crossed that it's only cosmetic. In which case, I won't be making a claim.

Thank you to everyone for your advice, much appreciated.

Funnily enough that's what both of us said just before we resumed our journeys - if there's a next time, maybe I should hit the pheasants instead and then we can pluck them and share them for our dinners!
