Virgin Media email

It appears that Virgin Media have finally ditched their gmail based webmail system and gone with their own. Unlike their gmail platform, where you could not successfully add a forwarding rule, you can now. Too late for all their landline customers they [STRIKE]threw away[/STRIKE] sold to TalkTalk, but at least anyone with a virgin (ntlworld, blueyonder etc.) email address can now set up an email address not tied to their provider and put a forwarder on their old address without relying on an email client to do it.

Took them long enough to realise Google had sold them a lemon. ;)

The transfer to the new system seems to be taking rather a long time and is being done in stages according to your email suffix. I believe they started with @blueyonder account holders. Reading the VM forums I suspect they have encountered rather a lot of technical issues and there have been plenty of @blueyonder people complaining about missing mail, difficulty logging in, emails being rejected etc.

I'm an @virgin.net account holder and I got VM's email notifying me of the upcoming changes weeks ago but still nothing has happened.

I have an ntlworld email address I tested it with. That change seems to have gone through OK...

There are a lot of things wrong with the new Virgin Media mail platform - but of course there were lots of (mostly different) things wrong with the previous Gmail-hosted mail platform, which Google is stopping providing to ISPs.

Virgin Media's long-term strategy used to be to cease providing their own mail system, which would make people use something else, and thus free themselves from a quite incredible amount of hassle. Whether it is Liberty's strategy now, I don't know.

ISP mail accounts are best avoided. I have a Virgin email address solely for logging into my Virgin account.

You don't even need one for that anymore - I've never used my Virgin one as I have a legacy google apps account of my own...

I know, but I have it from back in the NTL days and login to the site is so rare it's not worth changing...;)

Would this have anything to do with the fact that I have lost my Incredimail? I still have an ntlworld email address, I've done everything I can think of, even uninstalling incredimail and reinstalling. Gets to the point where i have to enter the incoming and outgoing POP info, but no matter what i try, won't accept them, just says Virginmedia not responding. I know not everyone is a fan of incredimail, but it suited me fine, and I'm used to it. Using Virginmedia email now, but its a bit naff.
