Wrong item received, refund query

At the beginning of September I've purchused a bubble wrap but was sent a brown 'craft' paper instead. I was given an RM label to return the item to sender for a refund, but now they are telling me, they can only refund, when they get the parcel back.
I've sent them proof of postage receipt, and My query is, what would happen if they haven't received the parcel back or it was damaged, who's going to be held responsible and where do I stand with a refund? Thanks

Are you a business or a private seller? How long ago did it go back?

I'm a private seller but it was a purchuse, so not sure what difference does it make? I sent it back at the beginning of the week, by 2nd class, so technically, it should've reached them by now.
