different egg Con!

Hi I hope this is ok to post but I am off to Devon next month for the launch of a charity that rescues spent battery hens. Jimmy Doherty of BBC 2's 'Jimmy's farm' has taken in 100 girls already, filmed for BBC 2. 2200 hens are being rescued and myself and a friend will help with the aftercare, plus many other volunteers.

You may think you buy free range eggs but did you know alot of products, Hellmann's mayo, coleslaw, dressings and pasta contain battery eggs! Well known brands not just cheap products!

20 million plus hens are standing in battery cages as I type and have no chance to behave naturally.

The egg con is the consumer not being aware and if you feel as strongly as I do please visit https://www.thehenshouse.co.uk and write a polite letter or there are other things you can do. Simply asking and stopping the purchase of products supplied by manufacturers responding to supply and demand.

Simple we don't buy they won't sell and more girls can be free range. The British Egg Industry Council suggest eggs would increae by just 20p per dozen if free range. 20p...less than a packet of sweets!

Thanks for your time and Martin please drop a response to me if you have chance.

Sorry folks web details now correct!!

I totally agree! I don't claim to be the biggest animal lover in the world but what we are doing to these hens is (in my personal opinion) totally shameful. Apart from the miserable lives that these poor "egg-producing machines" are living in, I am sure that eggs produced by such unhappy hens can not be very healthy for us either.
I know that free-range eggs (and other products containing free-range eggs) are more expensive, but the cheap prices we are paying for non-free range is simply a reflection of the pathetic way we keep these creatures in.
Sorry for my soap-box, and thanks for your work Jayne.

Thank you Tony!! You keep on your soapbox, no probs!

Yes the hens have to be given routine antibiotics so it's then in the food chain, any surprise that there's MRSA?

I bought an Eglu and 2 chickens after watching the programme that inspired this crusade. They are wonderful pets and just like a dog, running and following you round, to imagine them not being able to stretch and do all the things they 'neeed' to do does make you very sad.

Sentiment doesn't help them so I guess word of mouth and shopping basket revolution! Peaceful organised protest shopping, that's my approach and write letters.

Found out heinz use battery eggs today, Linda Mccartney (which they own, free range eggs) double standards. they assume that meat eaters don't care and I'm a veggie on the meat eaters side to have quality and properly reared livestock.

I'm not a strange radical, really!! Quite normal.

    Hi Jayne,

Keep up the good work! Can't get the link to work unfortunately. Don't buy many processed things, but could you direct us to a list of who uses free-range? Would never dream of buying battery eggs, and my parents have had chickens for years, so am a bit sheepish that I didn't think about them as ingredients in other things....
    Cheers!

So sorry Bun. Have had the flu and my brain is not in gear. I have now corrected the address https://www.thehenshouse.co.uk.

The message is just check your shopping basket, you'll soon get used to products that are hen friendly. Waitrose are very clear on packaging and all M&S products use free range eggs! Co-op actually use the term 'eggs from caged hens.'

I've written to Hellmann's to stop using battery eggs in their mayonnaise!
