I had a powerful desktop built for just under £300 2 years ago and its still rated highly today by Microsoft. Would have been worth double off the shelf.
I agree custom built are always a cheaper option!
Another option to what sarahdon09 suggested is to consider what type of machine you are going for depending on your needs (HTPC, Gaming ..etc) and build the machine yourself! Just google pcpartpicker. They've got great guides of what type of computer you want to go for and direct links to where you can buy the parts!
