Help with VLC player

Options
Are there any VLC experts out there? I can play an official R2 dvd just fine however sometimes the next day it won't play. Some dvds, even from the same box set, won't play at all. I just get a horrible stuttering sound from the drive and can't read file or VLC not responding message.
Tonight I tried to play a R1 dvd but it wouldn't play so I changed the HP Pavilion code to R1 but it still won't play. I've tried downloading VLC again but still no good.
I have VLC set as automatic default player however it doesn't open when I put a dvd into the drive which surely it should do, I have to manually open it on the desktop. I have windows 8.1. Anyone know what's wrong?
I opened up Cyberpowerdvd earlier which I've never used and dvds wouldn't play on it at all.

Just realised the dvd I was trying to play this evening isn't even a R1 its multi region, so surely should've played ok.

    +1

    Faulty drive.

They're as cheap as chips new and are plug and play (ha!)

But cds play perfectly in media player, wouldn't I have a problem playing anything with a faulty drive? Why would vlc have 'not responding' message, doesn't that indicate something wrong at vlc end?

Depends on what the fault is and if it has gone completely.

Nope, it indicates something is wrong, that is all, the fact DVDs are playing up on all software points to a duff drive.

Obviously nothing to do with VLC.

Drive is either dirty or faulty.

Thanks. Irritating as I've hardly used the drive. One point, sometimes when I first switch laptop on the drive will make a noise as if it's going to launch but there's no disc inserted, also sometimes drawer will pop open on launch.
