Tax credit overpayment

Hi all
I received a letter today in the post saying that I have 30 days to pay back an over payment that my ex wife received for the period of 2007 - 2008 for just under £6000, Does anyone know where I stand legally as I cant afford to repay that amount and since then I have remarried and have 2 children of my own now, The child was not mine, The payments never went into my bank account and our divorce was finalised in 2008.
I have spoken to HMRC and they cant give me a breakdown of the payments or how come I owe that amount.
I questioned them as to why the overpayment was not taken out of my ex wifes tax credit awards over the years after that time period they informed me that they would not collect payments in that way.
I did query as whether or not the debt would be classed as statute barred as no payments had been recieved towards the overpayment in the last 7 years they informed me that they would pass the amiunt owed over to debt collection agencies if I did not make any payments.
Please can someone shed some light on the situation as I have already cleared nearly 7000 of my ex wifes debt which is another story
Many thanks in advance
