Rubbish chest of drawers

Today I had a new chest of drawers delivered and I'm really disappointed.
It cost me £150 and is as flimsy as a match box. Was I expecting too much for my money?
The top, sides and drawer fronts are pine and the back and inside are thin wood. Remember that stuff you used to make planes out of when you were a kid? Balsa wood?
The balsa(?) bits are full of splinters and I daren't put anything in it until I give it a sanding because it will shred my clothes.
Is there anything I can do to give it a bit of strength. Should I varnish the insides to toughen it up?
Any advice would be great about how to get it to last a while, I'm hoping to get a good few years out of it.

Return it as unfit for purpose and get an old/antique one.
The last one I bought from my local auction is solid walnut and cost me about £12.
I hate modern rubbish!"I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0 -
Ask for your money back Barbara, as not fit for purpose.
If you paid by credit card you can claim from them if the retailer refuses.0 -
I'd definately ask for a refund, so hold off doing any improvements to it for the time being.

Thank you for the replies
I'm going to the place where I bought them tomorrow morning to complain.
When I take a drawer out it rattles where the bottom piece hasn't been glued to the sides. If I was to put anything in that weighed more than an ounce I'm sure it would break.
I feel so ripped offThank you to everyone that posts the competitions and answers :A0 -

I share an industrial estate with a company who sell furniture, these days it all comes from china, and isn't the best quality.
I can't help thinking some of it is made out of pallets....The money, Dave...0 -
barbara where did you get it from as we are looking for bedroom furnitureIf You See Someone Without A Smile......Give Them One Of Yours0

Like Norma, I buy quality furniture from auctions at low prices.
Recently bought a chest of drawers for £40 brilliant condition, properly made, dovetailed drawers, and solid bottoms.0 -
I went back this morning and I told them some of the wood was split in the bottom of the drawers.
They are bringing me a replacement tonight and taking away the other one.
I had another look around the shop. All the furniture looks beautiful on the outside but when you open up doors and drawers it is all cheap wood
Hopefully the one I get tonight is an improvement.Thank you to everyone that posts the competitions and answers :A0 -
Give me Ikea any day, it may be flat pack but it's really well made. And cheaper!0
