Received a £30 Default From 3 Mobile

3 Mobile wrecked my credit score with a default for the tiny sum of £30. It was the end of a contract (I had been with them 4 years, paid thousands of pounds for their services without a missed payment) I thought the account was closed and settled. Had no communication from them and then 3 months later they whacked a default on my account for £30 outstanding. I payed it immediately once I saw it on my file and the account is now "settled". But of course the default still remains.

I tried to dispute it through my agency reporting service and they just sent me an automated reply saying that defaults are final and basically I was in the wrong, a shaming and condescending reply.

Is there anything I can do? Or am I stuck with this albatross for 6 years, which seems grossly disproportionate.

Thanks for your time.

Complain to 3, saying that if they do not remove it you will be taking them to the ombudsman and making a complaint to the ICO that they recorded a default incorrectly and/or without giving you 28 days warning in which to pay before they did this.

By the way this seems to be a very common scenario with 3 and some of the other mobile providers. Their systems seem to fail you when ending contracts, and many many many people end up with defaults when they were told that nothing more was to pay, and the company failed to contact them to ask for the alleged missed payment.

  • Thanks for the reply. I will pursue that route instead of going through the reporting agency. Will do so in writing with recorded letters because their phone support is terrible. When I phoned to settle the amount they said nothing could be done about the default and it was final. I'll also familiarize myself with the ICO and outline specifically which guideline or act they have transgressed in this matter.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, I will update with the outcome.

One wonders why such a company is still allowed to report its customers' accounts to the CRAs.

Three are a nightmare I had a similar issue just over 6 years ago. The default just came off my report a few days ago. I hope you have better luck than I did 6 years ago!
