I'm wondering if anyone has used AP24 whitening toothpaste and if they thought it was any good?

  • Reviews on amazon uk seem to be quite negative..

The American version contains peroxide, the UK one does not.

Numerous studies both scientific and consumer led have shown no toothpaste whitens, not one.

If you have heavy tobacco, tea staining etc what they may do is get rid of the stain. The way they do that is by being abrasive or acid or both. So what will rub away stains will also rub away enamel if you are not careful.

It is not legal for toothpastes in the EU to contain more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide but even if they did peroxide degrades quickly and is not in contact long enough with the teeth to do anything.

So to precis no toothpaste including ap24 whitens teeth. Save your money and buy supermarket toothpaste it will do as good a job but a lot cheaper.

Most 'whitening' toothpaste is pure marketing. Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste. If you want whiter, you need to go to the dentist, where they can use concentrated chemicals at much greater mg than is allowed in a toothpaste or other off-the-shelf product.
  • so how do they get away with claiming that they whiten teeth then? If they don't whiten teeth, they would be had up under trade descriptions or something like that, surely.

Because you will get whiter teeth. But it will be by such a tiny percentage that phrases like "guaranteed whiter teeth" are still OK. But it is literally not even noticable to the human eye. You might *think* they're whiter, but the only person who might notice is you, and it will be so so fractional it is not worth paying extra money for.

This also includes those blue laser treatment kits, whatever they're called, dentistry or hygienests do the same technique however home-kits are only allowed to be up to a certain level of intensity because of regulations, only such treatment at a professionals is worth any money.

The chemicals/methods over-the-counter you can buy isn't false, its just nowhere near worth paying the money for because you literally cant make much noticable difference. Only the professional can.

Because as has been said the claims of whiteness are based on perception of participants .

The ASA does pick up companies but the overwhelming advertising still fools people into thinking whitening toothpastes whiten when they clearly do not. Here are some adjudications about Beverly Hills, arm and hammer, Colgate and coco white products.

Here is an article explaining how some of the "research" is done by toothpaste sellers. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2265539/Is-whitening-toothpaste-just-waste-money-They-promise-dazzling-Hollywood-smile-investigation-reveals-products-barely-make-difference.html

Save your money on whitening toothpastes and stick to own brands. Ditto don't bother with mouthwash there is no scientific basis to its health claims indeed in America 98% of mouthwashes are classified as cosmetics because there are no health benefits other than ones which are prescribed by dentists for short term use only.

Yeah basically the only things you should be doing at home is brushing twice a day with fluroride toothpaste, and flossing. Everything else is marketing. Good dentists will tell you the same.

The jury is out over flossing at the moment.

Interdental brushes are now thought to be much more effective!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
