FTB - Moved in Saturday yay!!!

We are so happy with our new house!

Now trying to go through the list of things to do. We want to get set up with decent gas and electric etc following Martins advice.

However, before we go onto a new tariff we need to sort out the old companies who provided it surely? Unfortunately we don't know who provided any of this.

Can we just pay for the new tariff with say EON (best rate we found) and they will sort out the switch for us?

Ask the seller who the current provider is?

My solicitor had asked tge vendor this and the info was in my paperwork bundle. Otherwise I think you can ring tge gas and electric boards for your local area and they will help you.
Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!
  • Make sure you have (or will) take the meter readings for electric and gas and also water if on a meter.
Then when you have sorted out who the existing provider is contact them, give your details and the meter readings. They will set up an account. If you intend to change make sure the account has no exit penalties. You will then be free to check available tariffs and start the change if you wish. It is or course possible that the existing supplier has a competitive tariff.
You will not be able to change the water supplier.

Spot on advice. With gas and electricity you need to open an account with the current suppliers and switch after.

The vendor should have said who they are on the Property Information Form but, if not, use the Citizen's Advice link above.

Phone the existing suppliers, tell them the date you took over the property (completion date) and the meter readings from that date. They'll start you an account with those opening readings. They'll try and flog you a fixed price, fixed term tariff and all that. If you're sure you want to switch, ask for a standard tariff with no exit penalties.

You can then arrange switching, but with the excitement of moving in it's easier to wait a month and get more urgent stuff done, then faff about with switching!

It's better to switch when you know your consumption as different tariffs are better for heavy/light users. If you give it a while, you'll have a set of bills with the number of units of each of gas and electricity used, and you can use online calculators to find the best tariffs for you.

The switching process takes a few weeks and you have to keep paying the old supplier during that time.
  • What would happen if the house was a new build?
As that's what I am purchasing so I didn't even think of this until I read this thread.

There will still be an existing supplier as the builder will have already registered. Otherwise they could not test appliances etc, not to mention making tea.
So the procedure is still the same regarding taking meter readings and contacting the supplier.

Ask the sales person at the development if you want to know now, otherwise they'll tell you at the house demonstration.
  • When I called eOn to tell them I'd like to use them as a supplier for my new property, they were able to check a database to find out who my current supplier was. I was then able to call Scottish Power to set up a temporary account and make the switch.
  • Glad we were able to help Landofwood. Thought I'd pop on with a few tips that might be useful as you start life as an E.ON customer. Sorry if you already know this stuff.

Have you registered with our website? There's quite a few tools on there to help you keep track of the account. This includes being able to enter meter readings and create your own bills. There's a bit of discount, too, if go for paperless billing. Worth £5 per fuel per year.

Do you pay with a Monthly Direct Debit (saves about £35 per fuel per year in lower standing charges)? If you do, you'll be able to take more control of the arrangement, including changing the monthly amount, through the online 'Direct Debit Manager.' Comes in handy should circumstances change.

Having just moved in I'm sure you've lots to do but, when you've a minute, check out the 'Saving Energy' pages. Lots of tips to help you save money by saving energy. Watch out for those vampires, appliances that continue to suck electricity even when they're not being used.

Do you know about E.ON Rewards? You can earn up to 1500 reward points each year. These can be exchanged for either Tesco Clubcard points or High Street Shopping Vouchers whichever you prefer. The scheme's free but you'll need to opt in to start earning points. You can do this online or over the phone.

Hope this is useful Landofwood and that you've settled in to your new home.
