Mobile insurance missold- O2

Having problems with O2 at present. Bought a HTC desire 620 on pay monthly contract 2 months ago, and being a little clumsy, insured it for £6 a month with £30 excess. Unfortunately at the weekend it took a trip down the toilet, dried it out overnight but it won't work. O2 have accepted my claim, but here's the problem, they can only offer me a replacement- the only one they have in stock is Sony Xperia Z- a model with a similar tech spec but 2 years older, so presumably refurbed. They can't offer me any money off my contract despite the fact I'll be paying for a phone I don't have- and therefore one of depreciated value (for example on O2 recycle the HTC value is £50 and the Xperia is £30). Unfortunately I am contracted til 2017.

I've been an O2 customer for 12 years, and I'm very disappointed, I wasn't warned about anything like this when I took out the policy. I'm going to complain via phone tomorrow, via email, letter, and in store as best I can in the next few days.

Wondered if anyone has had a similar experience and any success?

I took out an 02 contract recently and read the terms of insurance but didn't buy it.

It was clear that it was a replacement rather than cheque and that the replacement would be similar spec at their discretion.

It sounds like they are fulfilling their obligation, albeit in a way that some people might not be happy with.

They are replacing the phone with one of a similar spec as per the insurance agreement. Using mobilevaluer the HTC Desire 620 can be sold for £51.51 to envirophone and the Sony Xperia Z can be sold for £65 to fonebank. So your actually getting a phone that can be sold for more than your current one!.

But with a £30 excess and £6 a month premiums i wouldn't bother insuring such cheap phones!

Insurance is about replacing as close as like to like as possible.

I never buy mobile insurance. In 20 years of mobile phone use, I would never have used it. That is around £1500 in saved premiums in your case. Plus, why would you pay £6 per month to insure such a cheap phone?

  • Personally i'd take the Xperia Z
It's water proof, has an extra 1GB of RAM, a faster processor and better camera.
