Connecting laptop to plasma TV

Can anyone help me with a 'viewability' problem.
I downloaded the first episode of The Wire, so it's saved on Real Player on my laptop. We then connected it to the TV (a hitachi plasma). The sound was coming through the surround sound ok, but the picture size was very small i.e. laptop size. Even if we made it "full screen" it was still only about a third of the size of the TV screen, and become pixellated.

Am I missing a trick, or will the picture always be that size because it's being generated by the laptop?

I'm assuming the resolution on your laptop is 800x600 and on your TV is 1024x768? If it is, you can easily solve this problem by increasing the resolution on your lappy to 1024x768. You might see your laptop screen go blank in which case you can navigate through the plasma.
