                    Hi there,
Bit of a techie numpty and feeling a bit nervous about changing my AV set-up on my new HP laptop running Windows 10. It has a free trial of McAfee on it and I understand that if I want to run Defender I need to uninstall McAfee first. Do I just use the McAfee MCPR from the McAfee website and then I'm good to activate Deender or do I need to do something else as well? Also, will I then be ok just with Defender for protection or do I need anything else running too? Thanks in advance.

yes, use the mcRapee removal tool
uninstalling mc will automatically activate defender, but avast free would serve you better for protection, just do a custom install and remove the additional tools on the screen you do so on ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is...... ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple 0 0

You will need to uninstall Mcafee before running the MCPR

While we're discussing Mcafee, has anyone's opinion of Mcafee changed since Intel took it over.0

Everyone says how great avast is but I couldn't install it one Windows 7 because it gave me a BSoD every time. Haven't tried it since I got 10.What will your verse be?

They are all garbage, each year since the early 80's in my personal experience, all such as Avast, Lookout, Dr. Web, Zoner, F-Secure, Ikarus, and Kaspersky have told us they are keeping our data safe. And each and every year little old us - and big governments and corporations are hit with basic attacks even sony, verisign and ubersecurity were hit. Amazingly the thicko UK banks tried to install Phorm on our machines which is a keylogger.
My point is that Microsoft's own veteran protection system starting with Win7 and now Win10 SDL with the now mature MSE and [.]Net framework layered protection is close to as good as anything you pay for and better than anything free when it comes to software security.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. I try to be an even-handed poster and accept that you at times may not agree with these opinions or how I choose to express them, this is not my problem. you're lumping a lot of products and random misinformation into that statement, the end result is nonsensical.
